Tal commands her to leave a horse with supplies and to stay quiet about him being alive. Shay is in the town so the three lure her away. Tal and Athlen kiss and confess their feelings.ĭara comes with news that the royal family has declared Tal dead. Tal recovers in Athlen’s cave, Dara coming over to nurse him.
He falls into the sea and Athlen rescues him, dragging him on a jolly boat. Tal uses his magic when Zeph tries to kill him. A few days later, Tal’s siblings attempt to rescue him. Tal sends his location to his family and Kest appears as a bird (he’s got the ability to shape-shift). The nurse Poppy discloses their location in an attempt to make Tal confess. He insists that crown princess Isa must continue with her marriage to Emerick, the prince of a neighbouring kingdom. He manages to find parchment and writes letters to his mother using his magic to keep them posted. Tal is made to work as a slave and tortured. She’s been hired to force him to reveal his magic. As Tal walks back to the ship, he’s attacked and taken hostage on a pirate ship captained by Zeph. He can’t find his family and believes he’s the last merman in existence. Athlen shows him his cave and explains how he’s a merman and made a deal with the sea witch to have legs. Garrett, Shay and Tal do visit the tavern for dinner and Tal sees Athlen there again. Tal decides to distribute medical supplies and food for free rather than frolicking in taverns. They walk to Dara’s (Athlen’s friend) house and she’s blunt about how the royal family doesn’t do much. When they reach shore, Tal sees Athlen in the marketplace and helps him buy supplies for his friend. Tal’s great-great-grandfather had magic too and used it to wage war hence Tal’s abilities being a secret.
One of Garrett’s soldiers tries to kill Tal because of his magic but Shay gets there in time.
Athlen promptly jumps off the boat and Tal assumes he drowns which upsets him. They take the boy named Athlen prisoner and Tal is drawn to him. He’s both happy and nervous about his coming-of-age tour. Tal, pansexual and sixteen, has been hidden his whole life in the castle because of his magic. They find a strange boy on a derelict ship. Prince Taliesin of Harth has turned sixteen and is on his coming-of-age tour, accompanied by his older brother Garrett and bodyguard Shay.
